4. Objectives (outcomes)

a. Identify and collect at least 5 textures from the school environment using frottage.

b. Create a place-based frottage composition that represents their environment.

c. Explain how texture communicates ideas about their environment during class

discussion.

5. Time Requirements

a. 60 minutes total

i. Anticipatory set/Introduction -5 mins

ii. Artists example and discussion - 5 mins

iii. Teacher demonstration - 5 mins

iv. Students collect rubbings - 20 mins

v. Students create final artwork - 15 mins

vi. Clean up - 3 mins

vii. Reflection and assessment - 3 mins

a. White drawing paper to collect rubbings

7. Learning Activities/Tasks

a. Anticipatory Set - 7 mins (Slide 2)

i. “Today we are going to become texture detectives. We will explore our

school and collect textures to turn it into art.”

ii. Define Vocabulary: (slide 3-4)

b. Artist Example - 7 mins

i. The artist discovered frottage by rubbing paper over textured surfaces like

wood floors. He used those textures to create artwork inspired by his

surroundings.

ii. What textures do you see?

iii. Where might these textures come from?

1. Wood, leaves, bark, ground

c. Demonstration - 5 mins

i. One of us will find a texture in the classroom. We will go up to the wall

and place the paper over texture. We will hold the paper still and use the

crayon to get the texture.

ii. Talk about how the texture appears when rubbing gently.

iii. Ask students what might happen if I rub too hard?

1. Paper might tear

d. Explain expectations

i. Collect at least 5 textures

ii. Walk safely around campus and stay with our partner

e. Student Texture collection - 15 mins

i. Students will walk around campus and collect textures. They can go

anywhere on campus, however they need to be back by a specific time.

f. Students will create a collage using their collected rubbings - 15 mins

i. Instructions:

1. Arrange textures creatively

2. Fill all of the page

3. Overlap textures if desired

4. Show something about your school environment

g. Clean up - 5 mins
